How to Add Deposits to Repair, Product Build, and Layaway Payments

When you're dealing with service jobs like repairs, product builds, or layaways, collecting a deposit upfront isn’t just good practice—it’s essential. Deposits help secure the transaction, protect your business from last-minute cancellations, and ensure your customers are committed before you start the work.

Why Taking Deposits on Service Jobs Just Makes Sense

Let’s say a customer walks into your store holding a worn-down necklace that needs repairing. She’s kind, enthusiastic, and wants it done ASAP. You take the piece, create the service job, and say you’ll call her when it’s ready.

But three days later, she ghosts you.

Now you're stuck holding onto the item, having spent time and possibly materials with nothing to show for it.

It happens more often than most store owners admit... and it’s why adding a deposit at the start of a job can save you major headaches down the line.

Why Deposits Matter More Than You Think

A deposit isn’t just a payment—it’s a signal. It tells you the customer is serious. It gives you coverage in case things don’t go as planned. And it keeps your cash flow moving on jobs that can take days—or even weeks—to complete.

Think about it: Whether it’s a $1,500 product build, a high-priority repair, or a multi-month layaway plan, you’re investing your time and resources before the customer walks back in. A deposit helps balance that equation.

To Add a Deposit, simply:

  • Create a new Repair, Product Build, or Layaway job.
-Fill out the job details as usual.
  • Click the “Add Deposit” button.
-After adding the job to be repaired/built in the cart, you’ll see this option available in the cart section under the         product.
  • Enter the deposit amount and select a payment method.
-Enter the agreed-upon deposit amount. The deposit will be displayed in the cart and automatically calculated as         part of the total during checkout.
  • Save the deposit.
-It will appear in the Payments section and will automatically be applied to the final balance once the job is         completed.
  • “When a customer puts down a deposit, they’re not just securing a service—they’re showing commitment. And that changes everything.”
